I bought this book because I am a big fan of this author, and because I have read all of her other books in the "His Mate-Brothers" series . There are some grammar issues here and there, but they don't detract heavily from the story. I enjoyed this book. Highly entertaining- laughed out loud at numerous places. Plan to read more of this series, hope they're all as amusing as this one.

Our kids loved this book, and so did we. We just got it this morning, and we've already been through it four times. There were requests for additional read-throughs, but that's all we've had time for so far.Our daughter is 5, and really likes all the kids at the zoo having fun. Her favorite part is "Leopold's face when he decides to be mean is really funny, but he's not being very nice." She added, "When Leopold is mean, no one wants to be his friend and give him snacks."Our oldest boy is 4. He is a big fan of all of Leopold's silly faces. He also likes how he "sniffs his bottom to see if he's stinky." He later noted, "When someone trips and they're carrying something that could float away when they trip, and you don't help them catch it, that makes them sad." Then he brightened and added with a giggle, "When he's eating snacks at the end, his bottom is sticking way up in the air!"The twin boys are just turning 2. They like pointing at all the balloons and yelling, "BOON!" They also like snitching some of Leopold's snacks and pretending to eat them. We're big fans of all of Elise Parsley's books. This one did not disappoint.Lastly, our kids are full of fun imaginings of the mayhem that could ensue after the final page, since the balloon man appears to be pushing his cart toward another interesting encounter. The possibilities are exciting!

Another home run from author/illustrator (self-proclaimed "illustrathor") Elise Parsley! Our 5, 3, and 2 year old LOVE this book. The pictures are bright, full of expression, and hilarious, and the story is whimsical and fun. As a mom who reads a lot of books to her toddlers and preschoolers, Elise Parsley's books are a beacon of fun, intelligent light in a world filled with lots of terrible children's literature. Her stories are clever and well-written, thus fun for both the child AND the parent! What a thought! Reading with your child should be fun. And, with this book, it is!P.S. If you're looking for more ideas of new children's books that are clever and fun, we've loved books by Adam Rex, Mac Barnett, Jorey John, Ryan T. Higgins, David Shannon, and Jon Klassen. Happy reading!

My son loves this author's fun and vibrant style. We have a number of her books. This one is both a fun story and visually interesting full hilarious facial expressions that contribute a lot to the story. It has a great message about ego and acceptance of things you cannot control as well. My 4-year-old probably doesn't get the deeper meaning entirely yet but the pictures are easy to follow and helps him to understand as much as he can.

Bought two copies of this book for my two grand children. They really enjoy Elise Parsley's books.

Great book, we enjoy all of Elise's children's books—my wife uses it for story time while substitute teaching.

Very funny and sweet! My niece and nephew, ages 6 and 3, want to read this story again and again! It never gets old and we are eagerly waiting for another book from this author!

My 2 year old loves Leopold! He shouts at pages as we go. And this is one book I don't mind reading every day. It's so well done

Great book for parents to share with young children. Teaches consequences in a very gentel funny way.

I liked the side notes and history included in the text.

good read and the material allows for lots of room for creative expression

daughter uses at college

As the title states. . . . Yikes!!!! These plays are difficult!!! I thought I would blow through them!! Was I wrong!! More difficult than you know who!!!! In the bottom margin of the play, there is what amounts to a running translation. But only for the most difficult lines!! But the entire line is translated!! I have an older edition of this book, this A.C. Cawley edition, published by Dutton. Moreover, there is also a gloss on the side margins. Which is not exhaustive for all the most difficult words. So have a good dictionary at arms length. And, of course, now with the internet. Wikitionary is pretty good!! "Abraham and Isaac" reads a tad more easier. A play that does not belong to any cycle!! the Brome Abraham and Isaac. I haven't got to "Everyman" yet. Get it: Everyman publishes "Everyman"!! I made a funny!!!!

I bought this as a required textbook for a class. It is interesting; the introductions to each play really illuminate the material, and the footnotes provided resolve much of the confusion the language of some plays might give to the average reader. I would reccommend it as a textbook, as well as some interesting light reading for those interested in Medieval drama.

Everyman could be my next door neighbor. Seriously. He could be virtually anyone. This character appears on every television show, every comic strip, and in almost every movie. Why? Because the character "Everyman" IS every man. The trials and tribulations of Everyman are the trials and tribulations of every man. It's that simple. Read this small tome and learn about the human condition. See how man hasn't changed one iota in half a millenium. Scary, huh? --- C.B.

thankyou for this opportunity. I first read this play in 1968, preceding my role as "Fellowship" for my school's production of 'The Reading of Everyman", played out within our School Chapel. In later years I can now better understand about my role not knowing then, the impact that this play would have in my adult life. I am now 57 and a retired Army Chaplain(not that you really retire). Over the years I had lost the books that I had, and now through the ability of [...] I can relive those years and can more fully understand the content. thankyou.

Everyman transcends all times, every time. Written six hundred years ago, the tale remains as relevant now as it was then. I recommend this for anyone who has ever pondered the human condition and wonders about its future. It's all here at "Everyman."

#59,337 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I bought The Good Book basing my judgment on five stars reviews "forgetting" to hear the "other side" - the people who gave the book only one star (some of them because there is no "zero stars" possibility). When you are interested in a theme, usually you pay more attention to opinions that corroborate your expectations - this is elementary psychology (my dear Watson), and I uncritically fell as a victim to it.After browsing a while through the book, I discovered very soon that the author used an impressive number of sources showing rare erudition and knowledge of an impressive number of sources spanning millennia. If, for some people, religion is a drug, then this kind of book should be a detoxification agent allowing user to gradually live a life without the drug. At best, this book should be compared to Methadone - having all effects of drug use without using the actually drug. Let me explain. The subtitle of the book - "A Humanist Bible" - is per se a contradiction, a kind of "wooden iron". Humanism (as a great and inspired introduction to Humanism I recommend: Good Without God: What a Billion Nonreligious People Do Believe) should be a worldview based on the believe in humans (without gender and race differences) - not a worldview referenced to religion, even as a kind of negation. So Atheism, Agnosticism or Irreligion are all defined by their relation to religion (a "negative" relation is a relation, too) and this people are free to do so. But Humanism, as a belief, should be defined by its own set of values without a need to reference itself to any other system of belief. From the premise that "man is a measure of all things..." (Protagoras), and from centuries of humanistic efforts to build a consistent system of critical thinking (thus making Humanism a system of critical methods rather than a system of beliefs that shoud be passed as "humanistic wisdom" to next generations), a "Humanistic Bible" is not a mean that justify the Humanistic goals! There are two main flaws in The Good Book that makes it unsuitable to be listed among the good books of Humanism:1. As few one-star fellow reviewers mentioned, TGB is "free" of any reference to sources cited or used to compile the book. This is not a humanistic approach because a Humanist should allow readers to follow his footsteps and critically assess the sources themselves testing in the process the author's honesty in using and interpreting the sources. A.C. Grayling with TGB demands from us to believe in the face value of His book forgetting that a Humanist is supoosed to believe in Humanism, but by no means a fellow Humanist should be believed just because He says so in spite of his erudition or personal intellectual and academic history. So, the lack of references is a serious crime against Humanism which should not be justified even taking in account the "noble purpose" of the author who aimed to deliver an inspirational book and doesn't want to "distract" readers with footnotes (although endnote references could solve both problems).2. Even if TGB had footnotes (or endnotes), it still lacks a fundamental prerequisite to be a truly "Good Book of Humanism": it lacks a Humanistic independence from the form and style of "inspired" sources coming from other worldviews - in our case from Christianity. The author thus conveys us a notion that true inspiration and wisdom should be delivered by means of the other wise and inspired Book using its style and structure as an instrument to enhance the credibility of TGB. In other words, the author suggests us that there is no possibility of writing a truly wise and inspired book under the wing of Humanism without borrowing from religion as a "specialist" to uplift people's emotions and spirits (well, at least, the author shows that He is unable to do so). If centuries of Humanism, thousands of books inspired with Humanism and hundreds of Humanists who gave their possessions, health and even lives for the ideas they lived for - if this is not enough to find a form and style for uplifting and inspiring readers making them proud of a long Humanistic tradition in defending and improving human dignity, then today Humanism is in trouble. Yes, it is much easier to "borrow" the form and style from the Bible, put Humanistic contents in The Good Book, and then hope that somehow this "genetic manipulation" will result in a book saturated with Humanistic content that could inspire the readers as the Bible inspires Christians. This is so wrong that could be named as "capital crime" against Humanism or, if you like it better - "good intentions that paved the road to Hell".This book shows plainly that the goal is not able to justify the means because the means in itself contain a part of the goal. For example, you can't educate children and young people for democracy and freedom of thought by using only lectures and the teacher's authority. Freedom as a goal demands teaching methods and strategies such as free discussion, critical thinking and testing of all authorities - the teacher in the firs place. So, A.C. Grayling with His TGB fails to become a teacher of Humanism - a shame considering the energy, stamina and erudition He offered to His masterpiece - yes, masterpiece, but not a Humanistic masterpiece!

We are told never to judge a book by its cover, although often we are wise to do so. The cover of this book claims it is a "Good" book. Most of us are too humble to make such a claim, and leave it to our readers to decide. Not content with this self-praise, the author makes the pretentious claim that it is a "Humanist Bible." The rest of the cover is empty space -- a warning to those thinking of reading the 600+ pages. The purported subject of this book, the wisdom of the ages, is one which greatly interests me. Unfortunately this author, born in a British colony in Africa and advanced to high status in what remains of the British Empire, gives us a second-hand version, muddled a bit, and sanitized of all religion (in keeping with the author's proclaimed atheism). The result is second-rate. When compared to the King James Version of the Bible, created by many scholars, it is a comic book.Mr. Grayling is a professor of philosophy. As Henry Thoreau noted this is to be distinguished from a real philosopher. He has no doubt sought to teach what others, some wise, have said or written. As someone once noted, the streets of London have experienced centuries of history without learning much. So it is that one may read much wisdom and never become wise. One great advantage of Amazon is that it allows potential buyers to read a bit -- either through a free chapter via Kindle (if you are not located in a disadvantaged country) or through the Look Inside feature. I think reading just a bit of Genesis, which has very little to do with the sort of thing that might be found in the Hebrew Bible's "In the Beginning," should disabuse most potential buyers from any thought that this will be enlightening. I really wonder why anyone would think it worthy of publication.

I hoped this book would be structured similarly to the Buddhist Bible by Dwight Goddard: a collection of relevant texts from great philosophers. But the author actually structured it like the Christian Bible, and none of it's referenced to the philosophers who Grayling claimed inspired and informed the text. So if anything rings true, you have no way to read more from the relevant philosopher.Too bad. I hope someone will pick up the Buddhist Bible and develop something similar based on secular philosophers. The Good Book is somewhat pointless, unless Grayling really imagines that agnostics and atheists will use it the same way a Christian might use the Bible. I certainly couldn't reference this in a research paper or even use it to make a point in a theological/philosophical debate.

It is absolutely fantastic! Last night I stayed up with my 10 year old daughter and my 7 year old boy reading the Parables chapter - the story of the leopard and fox. They couldn't get enough of it. I read untill I was horse and they wanted more. I had to cut it off and go to bed however after I put them to bed I read it under my covers to not wake my wife. Honestly I can't put it down and I can't wait till I get off work today so I can go home and read it. Thank you AC Grayling!Regarding the criticism of the lack of footnotes - valid point, at first I was a bit disappointed that there were no sitations of the author, however I think I am actually glad he didn't put them in because it truly would be a distraction for me. I could see myself not focusing on the passage and become more concerned about who wrote what. Then I'd have to go look it up, etc. It seems a bit more pure this way with only the wisdom and poetry to focus on. I bought 4 copies for friends and family. I treasure this text like a box of gems to open and discover every day. I'm lucky to have found out about it and yes it is far superior and a lot less scary than the original.

This is actually a pretty good book, and the author is clearly a kind, caring man who walks his talk. He's a much better representative of liberal Christianity than Spong, who is surprisingly mean-spirited and angry (from what I read of one of his books). What bothers me about this book is the full-on atheism behind the message - the author clearly sees Jesus as an inspiration for "social justice" and helping the poor, but he doesn't believe in the resurrection or even in an afterlife! Instead, the reason you have eternal life is that your brain shuts down before you experience death so somehow, in this netherworld of not-quite-having-died yet you may feel like you are living forever, and because all you ever experience is life anyway, because you can't experience being nothing, then that's your "eternal life." Hardly comforting. Because of this explanation of "eternal life," I'm left wondering what the author actually thinks God is, or what a soul is. He talks a lot about God and soul but clearly disbelieves in the supernatural. There's a middle ground between outright atheism (albeit, a kinder, gentler atheism) and the fundamentalism seen in certain Christian sects - this book did not provide it. Still, this book can be inspiring on other levels when it comes to helping others and making a difference.

I read this immediately after reading The Heart of Christianity: Rediscovering a Life of Faith by Marcus J. Borg. The two books make many of the same points, but they are very different books. Borg's is elegantly reasoned and written, whereas this one is more personal and folksy. Personally, I prefer Borg's style to Burklo's. However, if you agree with Borg's ideas but find his style too dry and scholarly, you might like this one.

I have been searching for a spiritual "home" for a long time, and this book allowed me to look again at Christianity.

It's one of the essential books as we move religion into a new millennium of inclusivity, compassion, love - all the lessons Jesus taught us when he walked with us.

Book exactly as described. Arrived Early. Recommend dealer. What more to say? 22 words to describe a good buy ?

The "Reader from San Mateo" with his/her critique of "An Open Road" is EXACTLY the type of "religious" person for whom this book is written. The single most important aspect of this book is that the author draws on scripture to substantiate his position. It is not just his opinion. There is no exclusivism in Christ's teachings. From the very brief insight into the Nativity story at the very beginning to the beautiful vignettes from his urban ministry experiences that begin each chapter, the author very meaningfully tells us that we are all one under God, that God has many faces he shows to many of different faiths, and that Christ came to reveal to us the beauty and strength of the spirit of in all of us.

Rev. Burklo begins with a fairly standard methodology. He rejects the truth value of meta-narratives, focusing divinity solely within particular "Christ experiences." He redescribes the Gospel story in terms of language and discourse. His primary critique of meta-narratives is that they are exclusionary, and hence run counter to his desire for inclusiveness. Rev. Burklo asserts a personal affinity to Christian imagery, but he grants equal status to other religious narratives.Within his methodology, Rev. Burklo defines "doctrine" and related terms in a negative manner. He dismisses any portion of the Bible or creeds that he deems to be exclusionary and/or contrary to reason. His definitions do not include Roman Catholic, Orthodox or Reformed Protestant understandings of these terms and he does not explore why doctrines arose or whether particular doctrines have positive value, intellectually or experientially. The tendency of this methodology to exclude the orthodox reflects a performative self-contradiction inherent in inclusion/exclusion dialectics.Rev. Burklo proceeds to offer a fairly standard critique of the Bible's value as a historical document. He posits a dichotomy between critical inquiry and literalism. He rejects the latter but offers only a cursory nod to the possibility of a third position. In particular, the concept of the Bible and creeds as "witnesses" is not discussed. The destination of his critique is an assertion that Jesus was not God, but rather, and exclusively, a spiritually attuned human.Rev. Burklo then commences the constructive portion of his project. He asserts universal validity to religious feeling, and ascribes to religious feeling a set of positively valorized attributes. These attributes include deep personal happiness (focused through meditation and ego renunciation), optimism, and an ethical program of peace and social justice. While Rev. Burklo asserts his constructive program vigorously, his defense of it is not compelling. To the suggestion that religious feeling may find an atheistic explanation in terms of brain chemistry, cultural situation, and/or concepts such as infantile regression and wish fulfillment, he argues only that "[w]e know better in our hearts..." (p.29). With respect to the suggestion that an ethical program of peace and social justice does not necessarily flow from religious feeling, he acknowledges a groundwork problem (p. 111) but does nothing with it. Rev. Burklo's rejects numerous doctrines (e.g., the trinity) as illogical, but sees no illogic in making the problematic assertion (given our history of cruelty and indifference to inequality) that people are inherently good (p. 117). To the suggestion that religious feeling, without more, leaves little function for the visible church, Rev. Burklo asserts that local churches remain important to promote human contact and community service (p. 135) and to maintain the vocations of teachers in a "system of spiritual authority..." (p. 80). He envisions a day when different faiths will come together in a vibrant, non-antagonistic tapestry (p. 152). He does not address the cultural logic of his own program, which, if embraced, would undermine the reasons why distinctive faith communities exist.Beyond page 127, the chapters are a compilation of sermon notes illustrating earlier points or discussing "topics."

The ability to communicate the message of Christianity in simple and relavent ways is illusive , but not to Jim Burklo. I relished his explanations of the essential truths of the Christian faith . This is must reading for the faithful and for the unfaithful because it is clear and honest and deeply moving.Leda SanfordCalifornia

A History of the Ancient World by Chester G. Starr is among the best history books I have read, and I have read hundreds of history books. I even wrote one myself (The Super Summary of World History). By the way, Mr. Starr’s book is better than mine.A History of the Ancient World contains numerous charts, photographs, and maps to help the reader understand how all the facts fit together. Published in 1991, it compiles the knowledge gathered about the ancient world to that date and it covers all the details necessary to grasp the essentials of ancient history in easy to understand prose. At the end of each chapter is a detailed bibliography with brief comments on the books listed plus a further reading section relating the best books for more information on the era. There is an excellent index and a good general bibliography at the conclusion of the book.In each section Mr. Starr tells us about the general patterns of the era under consideration, and he has the masterful ability to distill the most important trends in a few words. He discerns and explains the most valuable developments and he lets the reader know why these facts are important. He also sets important literature and art into context. On page 199 the author tells us the story of the Iliad, explains that it takes place on two planes, the human and the divine, and how the divine was more important; however, the laws of the universe bound even mighty Zeus. He then compares The Iliad and the epic of Gilgamesh. Few other surveys of history can compress so much information into such a small number of words. If you read one book on ancient history make it Chester Starr’s, A History of the Ancient World. If you have read numerous books on history, then Starr’s history is a must read because you will find new insights on every page adding to your knowledge. A History of the Ancient World can help a person assemble their knowledge in new ways to reach new levels of comprehension. This is one of the best books of all time on ancient history.AD2

This is one of the most widely used college textbooks on ancient history, by the "the acknowledged dean of ancient history in America," Prof. Chester Starr, Dean of History at The University of Michigan, and it has been the required text for history courses at Michigan and many other major colleges and universities for over the past 40 years.Wanted to pick it up after reading Prof. Starr's excellent and enthralling abbreviated summary: "Early Man: Prehistory and the Civilizations of the Ancient Near East."Found it at on Amazon from Collegebooksdirect at a great price, and what a terrific find! The absolute most definitive, accurate and well-written source of ancient history facts, theories and wonderful insights and anecdotes for all serious and even casual history buffs and their bookshelfs.

I was looking for a general history of the ancient world; one that could be read by a novice. Starr's history fulfills that criteria.First of all, the format is excellent. He provides multiple maps of the ancient world as well as chronologically ordered outlines, which can also serve as a place for one's own notes. At the end of each chapter and at the end of the book, Professor Starr includes informative bibliographies. For those looking for a survey of the ancient world, the content in this book will not disappoint. After reading and studying this book, I can now pick any century of the ancient world and give its important people, events, and ideas. His style is straight forward and unadorned. He does not waste space with silly jokes or unnecessary adjectives. In a single volume history of the ancient world, this is crucial. A novice who genuinely wants to learn about ancient history will benefit from this book.

If you are at all interested in history, this is a highly readable and informative book. History taught in school tends to be boring because they cover so such with so little depth. Historical topics need to be given a context and details to be interesting. I'm not going to claim this book is going to compete well with many fiction best-sellers, but I thought it measured up well with the best books covering a historical topic or person that I've read. Given how much ground it covers, that's impressive.

A sweeping history of our earliest civilizations, this book will not let you down. The book's only shortcoming that I have discovered is that it was written in 1965 and only partially revised since then. Each chapter has its own bibliography and notes on sources, and it is mostly in these that it shows its age. This is a textbook. I look on that as a good thing because it means complete and balanced writing. You will find the social, military, material, and artistic details of each civilization sorted out and brought into meaningful relationships. Ideas are traced, and their spread through trade is explained.I am very satisfied with my purchase.

I used the first edition of this book in 1965 at the University of Pennsylvania. The current edition is updated well, and still outstanding, and as a paperback a lot cheaper than what I paid in 1965! Chester G. Starr is one of the most eminent historians of the ancient world. Highly recommended!

thanks

Likely outdated in some respects by now, this is still an enjoyable read. It is about one third Greece, one third Rome, and one third everyone else.
