I initially found this book at the library and after checking it out 4 times decided it was time to buy it.Houston is more or less the center of all the trails described in this book so it could be titled the guide to Houston and surrounding area birds, including the well known areas such as High Island and Anahuac, but also others like the Big Thicket. This book is really well thought out. It is by far the best book I've found for finding birds all within a day's drive from Houston.
This book starts to fill in the blanks left by the states maps on birding sites published in 1998. As a beginning birder I found this clearly written and concise book for the Texas birding areas extremely helpful. This book tells you exactly where to look for birds all along the Texas Coastal Birding Trail. Fantastic. I can't say enough about the descriptive directions and where each species likes to hang out. Can't wait to go back to some of the sites I tried and drew a blank with the book.
Texas Gulf Coast birders will want this book. I bought it new to give to a Houston Audubon member who loves birding in the Texas Gulf Coast. The book is well written, the photos are attractive. Good information and directions.
For those wanting to bird the northern Texas coast this book is wonderful. It has many loops. I have just returned from a spring trip and found the book invaluable, sending me to places the local birders know and go.

Maps, descriptions, pictures, this book has it all. I can hardly wait for my next week off so I can begin exploring the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail.
Very handy - always nice to get the most information before visiting a new area. Really looking forward to seeing the sights (swamps, mud, marshes, and even a city park or two) that birding leads you to.All of this information is available on the web, but slightly different. This book saves you the work and tightly organizes it. Decent maps and directions.
It feels like this book was written for locals. There is not one"small scale" map putting it all together. As a results I have no idea while reading this book hard far from the airport are the numerous spots mentioned; I certainly have no idea how far one spot is from another. I personally would not buy the book again
