The original publication of this book had been in my family for years but like a lot of things was lost to time. I was excited to find this republication, as the foods inside have not yet been over sweetened as many are today. Deducted 2 stars due to typos in the book. I believe this may be the reason for the overly salty comment.One recipe even calls for “urine†due to a typo. I cooked from this book as a kid and can tell you that this was not the case in the original book.The good news is that a little common sense and tweaking a recipe will result in old-fashioned goodness
I purchased this book after it was recommended by my chef. I have not been disappointed. It's simple food from a simpler time. The book was written in 1962. Don't expect to see quinoa, do expect maple cake, split pea soup (yum) and buttermilk pie.
This is a really delightful book. The only thing that would make it better would be if it were spiral bound to stay open while cooking. Yum!
I was looking for old recipes found in Ebony magazine and was pleased to find them available from the originator.
