A few of the other topics expounded upon are the Milky Way, Cinderella, the moon, and males giving birth. While some of the references put a cranky feminist spin on words that might in context have different meaning--St. Paul's oft-quoted "better to marry than to burn," for example--much in this vast tome will dazzle dabblers and intellectuals alike.

This is a classic, first printed in the 80's when I purchased it. Now I am purchasing it to give to my daughter in law for her birthday. Few books can withstand the test of time like this one. On one hand, it might seem that there is little interest in feminist scholarship, so that's why this book has not been followed by a hundreds more like it. On the other hand, it's hard to imagine anyone writing a better book on the subject, or more complete one. I am grateful for Barbara Walker for her courage, vision and scholarship to address women's history. She will probably never know how much of an impact she has had on women's evolution over these decades. I for one have taken inspiration and more from everything she has written.
Warning: buy this book and you can't put it down --- it's like the sorcerer's apprentice --- it just keeps pouring more and more out --- and covers just about everything in our culture, history and society --- from the past and all highly relevant for today. B. G. Walker is something else --- what a scholar.
OMG this book has such POWERFUL information. People NEED to buy this male or female(im male) OMG.
Yes, this encyclopedia is biased, but it is clear about that bias and scholarly in its approach. Footnotes and references abound. What it does is strips away layers of patriarchal obfuscation and make connections that are hard to find elsewhere. I use it in my Myth and Meaning class with appropriate caveats, and students love it. Start by looking at the entry for Attis; if you find that offensive rather than delightful, I wouldn't buy the book, but if you are astonished and intrigued, you will probably enjoy the rest. Be cautious, but enjoy! /tom Robbins borrowed important material from this book for his novel Skinny Legs and All.
I bought this book as a gift. I've owned it myself for many years. You could spend hours and hours getting lost in its contents because of all the cross-referencing and the "A-ha!" moments you get. I highly recommend it.
This book is a spiritual life saver for women who love the Goddess and wonder how the world got so lost in male god sadness. I have worn out one copy and had to get another because the first one just fell apart - and not because it wasn't made well! It just gets that much use in our house! An endless treasure!
I cannot get enough of anything she writes! This volume sheds light on so many topics.
I bought this book about 1993. Not sure the date. This was a most AMAZING book. I brought it to Belize with me, and then it died; however, a bookstore bought it when I sold it, and then sold it the next day, and it was in BAD condition.I have bought this book three times. Twice were stolen, once was sold.I thank you Ms. Walker.
