I want to thank SuBLime for bringing this wonderful manga stateside. It has been a favorite of mine for a few years now, and to finally have it on my shelf (and in my iPad) is a dream come true.Hinako Takanaga's "Awkward Silence" starts off focusing on high-schooler Satoru Toono (or Satoru Tono in this release) and his growing relationship with Keigo Tamiya. Theirs would be an uncomplicated love, if it wasn't for the fact Tono has a difficult time expressing emotion! (This is a curious twist on the average uke, if I do say so myself.) It takes Tono great effort to share his thoughts and feelings with anyone, including his new lover. This can lead to miscommunications, which often result in messy situations for Tono and Tamiya. Outgoing Tamiya and introvert Tono face many obstacles as their love grows, but these obstacles only serve to teach them how to best express and share their feelings for one another.Takanaga is one of my favorite manga artists and storytellers, both in and out of the BL genre. She has a sweet art style which is usually accompanied by a sweet story, and this is the case for Awkward Silence. While this isn't the funniest or sexiest of her works, it certainly is my favorite -- I've read Awkward Silence several times since scanlations started floating around the web, I own it in Japanese as well, and with the release of it in the states, I now own SuBLime's release in both PDF format (available on their website) and print. (Does this seem like overkill? Maybe. But when I support my favorite artists, I like to give my all!) I'm fond of the sugary sweetness in these kinds of stories, of silly miscommunications, and of unwavering affection between the two lead characters. There is nothing overly dramatic about this volume, but the characters are interesting enough to pull me in from the start and the situations they find themselves in are easy enough to relate to. Sometimes we need stories like these.Onward to the quality of this release! As I mentioned a couple of times, I own it both in print and in PDF format (which I enjoy on my iPad) so I'll review both. The print is your standard manga quality. The pages aren't anything special, but if you have a sensory defensive problem like I do, it can be difficult to handle for long periods of time. So, nothing special about the package the story comes in. What DID impressed me was I didn't see any errors while reading the manga. No typos, no glaring grammar mistakes, no poor redraws. I was very impressed with the quality of the editing! You can see the time they took in bringing this to the English speaking masses.I read through the PDF version this week. The pages on the ipad are clean and crisp (and large!) so if there are any errors, you'd be able to see it on your tablet device. I didn't see anything wrong. It wasn't like I was examining each page for problems or anything -- but as a reader who notices these kinds of errors on a regular basis, I can say that nothing distracted me from the story. Again, I was impressed with the quality.Every few pages or so, the name of who purchased the digital copy of the manga will appear at the bottom of the page. I can understand why they did this, though it was sometimes distracting. (My name kept appearing on the naughty pages! How embarrassing.) But I'm glad SuBLime releases their manga digitally as well as in print. I can carry around part of my manga collection in my iPad! How convenient. This is a must have for anyone interested in BL, both casually and as hardcore fans, and I'd recommend it to manga readers who enjoy a nice romance, as well. With lovely artwork, entertaining characters, and a sweet story, this manga satisfies on many levels. I can't wait for SuBLime to release the other volumes!
Satoru is shy, has difficulty speaking, and shows no expression on his face. His boyfriend, Keigo, likes Satoru the way he is. He works hard to understand the subtle differences in Satoru's looks and understand his feelings. It's hard work but it's part of what fascinates him about his boyfriend. As they have some communication problems, much of what is needed to say is said through their bodies. This is very much a yaoi manga. Satoru makes it clear, somehow, that he wants it as much as his boyfriend. They are a frisky couple. There is a rival who gets his own boyfriend during the course of the series.
Awkward Silence has for years been my favorite yaoi series so when I saw that it had finally been released on paperback I jumped at the chance to purchase it. The love story is so sweet and romantic. You really connect with the characters and want things to work out for them. Tono is a very adorable character whose problems stem from the fact that his emotions don't show on his face and he has a hard time expressing them. He's been in love with Tamiya for a long time, secretly watching him from afar. One day, Tamiya completely blindsides him when he asks Tono to go out with him! The two have a lot of angst-filled misunderstandings that really drive the story along and make you want to keep reading. A lot of humor and some steamy sex scenes!I highly recommend this beautiful love story to all yaoi fans!If you're new to yaoi, I think this would be a great starter manga. The sex scenes are steamy but not overly graphic, and the story itself is riveting. If you do purchase this manga, you should know that there are four volumes in this series. The first two have been released, the third isn't set to be released until February of 2013 and the fourth won't be released until August of 2013. I do recommend purchasing the first two together as the second volume closely follows the first. The third volume features a different couple within the same story, so that can wait awhile (and will in fact have to since it isn't released yet).Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did!
I got this on the kindle instead of paperback. This story is super cute!! It has an amazing plot, some drama, and lots of romance. Not only that but the art style is super amazing and cute!! It has little chibi faces some times that melts my heart XD. Also, this is a manga and like most manga, you read from right to left. It is in English and the grammar is very good. Thank you for this story!! I cant wait to get Vol. 2.
I really like these two, especially the introvert Tono who is just so cute, more so because he is incapable of expressing himself. As a result misunderstandings abound which thankfully are all resolved by the end of each chapter, which gives a terrific progress of their romance. This mangaka's artwork is really entertaining. Tono's face even if supppose to be expressionless is really filled with expression (you have to see for youself). Tamiya is a likable seme and steadfast in his love for Tono even as he feels frustrated at times when he wants a bit more "expression" from Tono. But Tono does surprise even shock him (So darn cute!). Their romance is wonderfully sweet and leaves me with a nice fuzzy warmth. The sex is explicit and sexy, despite the ridiculous censorship rules. Looking forward to Vol 2 indeed..
In fact I bought this book several months ago. I have reread the series several times. Though when I first purchased this book I was too eager to get to the next volume that I never reviewed it. I really really love the series though. It starts off great and progresses through the series. Even the people you don't like become characters you love! As always, thank you for publishing!
