This was a gift for my daughter...she Loved it! Is a real Gaiman fan.
Likely StoriesNeil GaimanHere’s Neil Gaiman again, spinning his slightly kinky dark stories in a dimly lit club late at night. This time it is not the inn at the end of the world, or the inn where Chaucer’s pilgrims met. We are at the Diogenes Club – a very much down at heels version compared to the one frequented by Mycroft Holmes.We are not in Victorian times, and these stories include some sexual practices and social diseases which are more common (or at least more commonly talked about) in our 20-21st centuries. The illustrations by Mark Buckingham are full of darkness and detail, perfectly complementing the stories told by the odds and ends of people patronizing the club.We may hear more tales from the Diogenes Club down the road.[Note: I had not read these stories in earlier, un-illustrated versions, so they were fresh to me. If you have read the stories before, you may have a different reaction to the graphics.]
If you've read Gaiman's anthologies "Smoke & Mirrors" & "Fragile Things," you've read these stories. Now in graphic format, but not new (unless you consider the use of "Closing Time" as a linking device to be new). Mark Buckingham's art is very good; I didn't care for his depiction of Charlotte in "Looking for the Girl," (he gets her 1971 hairstyle wrong), but he nails the boys & the creepy doorknocker in "Closing Time." The problem with graphic novelization is always that the artist's vision (even with the collaboration of the writer) is not necessarily that of the reader. (One of the many things I love about the "Sandman" series is that Gaiman worked with so many very different artists, leaving readers free to imagine which Morpheus they prefer, or even to imagine a composite.) However, if all you know of Gaiman is the best-selling "Norse Mythology," this is as good a book as any to familiarize yourself with his original short stories.
My son and I share a deep regard for anything Neil Gaiman writes or creates. I bought this book for my son for Christmas and he was thrilled. I hope to borrow it and read it for myself! Gaiman is one of those writers that can write excellent satire (Bad Omens), excellent children's stories, Thrillers, science fiction, adventure - you name it. I believe he is one of the greatest writers of our time.
