This autobiography details the extraordinary, dangerous efforts of a young Jewish woman to rescue 50,000 Jews from Nazi Rumania during World War Two. Although she died as recently as early 1980, she is one of those modest, unsung heroes who has been forgotten by history. Her selflessness demonstrates the power of a single, commited individual, a lesson which is universal in its application. There is no education or preparation for the extremely dangerous missions whe willingly undertook, without any financial reward. I personally corresponded with her twice in the late 1970's, when she wrote that her personal strength and commitment derived from her belief in G-d. Unfortunately, she passed away before I could visit her in Israel. She is the role model pas excellence for people of all faiths. After you reaad thismesmerizing book, I think you will agree that she should have been awarded the Nobel prize for peace, except that even that accolade would have been insufficient. Her award awaits her only in Heaven.
Great read!
When I first read “The Last Escape†some forty years ago, I had no idea that part of the story it tells is that of my own family.Since then, I have learned that my maternal grandparents were part of a clandestine transport of more than a thousand Jewish refugees from the Nazis (which came to be known as the Kladovo-Sabac group) that became stranded in the former Yugoslavia while trying to reach Palestine. Ruth Aliav Kluger, an agent of the Mossad le Aliyah Bet (illegal immigration organization), worked desperately with her colleagues to find a ship that could take the refugees to Palestine via the Black Sea and the Mediterranean, with the goal of evading British patrols and landing in defiance of the draconian restrictions on Jewish immigration imposed by the U.K.’s 1939 “White Paper.â€Tragically, Ruth and her colleagues did not succeed in saving the Kladovo-Sabac group, and my grandparents and their fellow refugees were murdered after the Nazis invaded Yugoslavia in April 1941. But with courage, daring and resourcefulness that almost surpass belief, Ruth overcame countless and seemingly insuperable obstacles to get thousands of other “illegals†into Palestine, who would have otherwise almost certainly shared my grandparents' fate.Ruth’s story is a thrilling and inspiring one. And the writing (which merits a nod to Kluger’s collaborator, Peggy Mann) is beautiful and often very moving. This is compulsive reading. It is also horrifying and heartbreaking reading. It is horrifying when Kluger recounts the anti-Semitic massacres she witnessed as a small child, and the unspeakable sadism of the pogroms (which Kluger barely escaped) perpetrated by the Rumanian Iron Guard and their supporters after taking power. It is also heartbreaking to be reminded once again of the bureaucratic heartlessness with which the Western democracies largely responded to the European Jews in their extremity. A little common humanity might have saved hundreds of thousands
This is a non-fictional account written by one of 2 "Ruth Kluger"'s. Although Ms Kluger had had no previous contact with the Mossad, she was approached, when aged 24, by key Mossad members for assistance in organizing the escape of Jews soon to be trapped in Europe. Within a very short time, she was running operations out of Rumania, her success being due largley to her personality and chutzpah. Well-written and fast-paced, the book describes in a very personal manner a fascinating story of courage in the face of mounting obstacles and tensions as WW II progressed.Be prepared, however, for an abrupt ending which does not address the ultimate fates of her family and others in whose stories the reader has become invested.
This is one of the most intriguing historical books I have read. This book gives an outstanding viewpoint of WWII from the Jewish perspective, and opened my eyes to many details that I did not know (and was not taught) when studying history. This book is a "must read" so that the historical aspect of what happened during the war can be truly understood.
This true account of a Mossad heroine is fascinating description of efforts by a group of nine men and one woman, the author, to smuggle Jews out of Europe from 1939 to 1941 prior to the holocaust. Well written!!!
One of the finest books I have ever read. Any woman who wants to read something truely inspiring, this is it. Any Jew (which I am not) should read this.
